Traveling salesman, distracted by birds (click to enlarge)I made this painting/collage on the bottom of a wooden orange crate. The holes in the bottom of the crate presented a unique challenge and it was a while before I decided to make birds peeping out of them. I added the branches at the end to deal with the odd shape of the border and try to tie the whole thing together.

The birds add so much to the composition. They really draw you in. Very nicely done.

I thought the birds would make an interesting oddity and also add a bit of humour. Other things I thought of using in the holes were eyeballs, coins or numbers, but I have to admit the idea of a salesman being distracted from his rounds and lured into the forest by birds really tickled my fancy. I guess I could have painted the branches on, but I'm always tempted to add something that literally leaps off the page. I realize I'm treading on glue-gun, pipe-cleaner and pot-pourri territory here, but I just couldn't resist. I think It adds a sort of voyeuristic quality-- as if you are looking into the woods, looking at the guy who is looking into the woods, who is looking at, or being watched by these birds. Ok, it is a bit creepy. Thanks!

very clever and WELL DONE !! I like your choice to include the twigs to frame the piece.
This reminds me of the kind of cinematography in Czech films ... if you don't pay attention to EVERY SINGLE THING, something will get past you -- or just plain GET you! Eerie, dimensional, provocative piece.

Open mouth, insert foot, seal with glue-gun. At the risk of digging in deeper, I meant to convey that I don't always know when I've gone to far. I always want to stick a little something extra on there and I'm forever rifling through my junk drawer, trying out different things. I was unsure about adding the branches, as my brain leaps and adds pussy willows on the tips. I wanted this to be a bit edgy, and not a flower arrangement. Sorry if I offended. I do own a glue-gun.:)
Glue gun? Is this not made with the glue stick exclusively??

Well RCD, I didn't use a glue-gun for this particular piece and while it is true my fondness for the gluestick is a compulsion I wear like a badge, it was your time honoured secret adhesive that is the glue which holds this work together. I am forever indebted.
Well now. Your flexibility in adhesive use is to be celebrated! Indeed, the glue stick would have been a poor choice... too glutinous and viscous to have held firm such magnificent limbs.
